University of Amsterdam

This two-day seminar is developed to examine the state-of-the-art research and practice dealing with personal and institutional collections and heritage practices in the Netherlands. By bridging theory and application, case studies and (digital) archives, this seminar considers the archive from the personal, the processual, and the public. In doing so, the archive is considered as originating from the personal, imbuing the personal with new commemorative power, and as functioning as a historical mediator of intersubjective experiences.

Through site visits and presentations, we consider the nexus of the archive with the personal, the digital, and the hybrid forms that this may result in. Hence, we consider the archive as an architectural structure and a place of power, as a site and mode of resistance, as a facilitator of knowledge, and as the virtual potential for multimodal research and public engagement with the past. By bridging the personal with the digital through the lens of archives, this workshop seeks to bring together archival expertise to facilitate an interdisciplinary discussion on archival heritage as multifaceted agent.
